Applications

Giving an electronic ID to each individual pet is like giving them their own passport. Small as a grain of rice - RFID transponders can be implanted under the skin of most pets to provide permanent identification and improve the chances of lost animals being returned to their rightful owners. Once implanted, the RFID chip can be used to conveniently manage companion animal health records and medical history.

Electronic identification of companion animals has been introduced in some European regions back in the early '90s and soon veterinarians, breeders, kennel clubs and other institutions began to see the benefits of this new technology. Today, microchipping is considered the most reliable and efficient way of identification and reunification of companion animals and governments and animal health organizations around the world have introduced laws that make electronic identification of companion animals mandatory.

Examples of countries where electronic identification of animals is mandated:

  • Identification of dogs and cats with RFID technology is mandatory in Canada (since 2005), Israel (since 2005) and Japan (since 2004).
  • Identification of dogs and cats with RFID technology is mandatory in some regions of Poland (since 1998), Serbia (since 2006), Slovenia and Spain (since 1990) and Switzerland (since 1994; since 2007 in the whole country).
  • Identification of horses with RFID technology is mandatory in Belgium (since 2002), Denmark (since 2001) and The Netherlands (since 2001).
